Statement of Teaching Philosophy
My education in voice performance and pedagogy has given me a comprehensive understanding of the voice, which is the basis for all my teaching. I lead with vocal function and aim to have all my students feel a freedom and ease in their entire voice. My vocal coaching engages enthusiastic and efficient methods to practice. My pedagogy is tailored through specific examples of imagery, cultivated in anatomy, physiology and physical awareness. I apply a well-rounded repertoire balanced in a multitude of styles including opera, art song, oratorio, musical theater, jazz, folk, country, rock, indie rock, R&B, and contemporary pop.聽
In lessons I focus on building an energetic and productive technique, grounded in breath support, effective posture and focused resonance, through use of Alexander Technique methods to optimize alignment, economical breath support and free movement. I employ a balance of spacious and focused vocal tone, as well as relaxed space to maximize resonance, projection and accurate vowel shape.聽
I encourage students to find their expressive musicianship, motivate their confidence and self-reliance as well as help them develop an understanding of language, musical theory, sight-singing, ear training, rhythm and evolve their harmonic awareness.
My focus on building healthy and efficient vocal technique provides a strong foundation for my students to approach any musical styles freely, and for all levels of skill, voice type, age, or background, as the principles of good technical training are universal.
Vocal health is also paramount to my work. I have seen the challenges that singers face when they lack the tools to properly navigate their vocal health. Having a thorough understanding of vocal health is an essential aspect of a performing career, and plays a role in my teaching techniques that focus on injury prevention and sustainability. I also work with singers who have sustained vocal injuries, helping re-train their speaking and singing voice.
My teaching goes beyond just the voice. I believe in transparency in education, and that we all benefit when we approach education with shared intentions and mutual respect. My studio door is open for questions and disagreements. I believe that clarity and communication are key to creating an equitable voice studio, where respect is present on both ends of the piano.聽
Finally, I believe in creating a vocal community that de-centers whiteness and patriarchal values. I strive to be an anti-racist educator. I believe it is essential that voice education reflects the needs of all singers. In order to prepare the artists of the future, it is crucial to practice anti-racism, equity, and work to make all students feel seen, heard, and educated.
