Climate change, pollution and听biodiversity听loss听are major threats to the sustainability of all life on our planet. They cause disease,听disability and premature death that听fall听most heavily on the world's most vulnerable populations. Pollution alone kills more than 9 million people each year.
听We're working to change that.

Boston College has established the听Global Observatory on Planetary Health听to track the impacts of planetary degradation on human health听and to develop science-based solutions.听
- We are examining the impacts of climate change on children鈥檚 health and air pollution on heart disease.听听
- We are听studying the health hazards of plastics across their life cycle and working with the United Nations to craft a strong and legally听binding Global Plastics Treaty.听
- We are working with colleagues at the Boston College Law School to听develop options for reform of national and international chemical policy that will protect human听health and advance social听justice.
The work of the Global Observatory on Planetary Health is inspired and guided by Pope Francis鈥� teaching in his encyclical letter,听Laudato Si鈥�, calling on all of us to care for our planet - our Common Home,听end injustice, and exercise a preferential option for the poor.
The Observatory has established partnerships with the UN Environment Programme, the听 World Health Organization and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco.听
In all of our work, we train and mentor students, building professional capacity in planetary health for future generations.
