MUSP2750: Musical Theater Cabaret
Pamela Murray has been a professional singer and voice teacher in the Boston area for over 40 years. As a soloist, she has performed with groups such as the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, and Emmanuel Music, and has recorded on the KOCH International label. Her performance venues include Symphony Hall in Boston, Chicago鈥檚 Orchestra Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
As a vocal instructor, Pamela teaches classical voice鈥攊ncluding opera and art song鈥攁s well as musical theater. She served for 10 years on the faculty of the American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training, where she worked with graduate acting students in both individual sessions and group settings. During that time, she deepened her expertise in musical theater repertoire and in helping students integrate acting fully into their singing.
For 20 years, Pamela has been a Professor at the Harvard University Extension School, where she has taught musical theater performance courses such as The History and Practice of American Musical Theater, as well as composer-focused courses devoted to artists such as Stephen Sondheim. In both classroom and studio settings, she creates a supportive environment in which students build confidence, develop healthy vocal technique, expand their range, and grow as expressive performers.
As a voice instructor for 13 years at Boston College, she has prepared students to perform as soloists with the Boston Pops for Pops on the Heights, to perform leading roles in musical productions, and to appear as concerto winners with the Boston College Symphony Orchestra. She is also co-founder and co-director of Musical Theater Cabaret, a performance ensemble that provides students with additional stage opportunities. Pamela earned her Master鈥檚 degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University, where she received operatic training while also studying classical art song and Lieder extensively in both academic and studio settings. She now coaches students in preparation for classical song performances and brings extensive knowledge of French, Italian, and German to her teaching, enabling students to sing confidently and authentically in these languages.
