Elizabeth H. Shlala

Elizabeth H. Shlala is a historian of the Middle East and North Africa. She is the Associate Dean and Professor of the Practice in the University Core Curriculum at Boston College. She has appointments with the History Department, International Studies, and Islamic Civilization and Societies Programs. Dean Shlala is the founding director of the Core鈥檚 Justice and the Common Good Living and Learning Community. She teaches the Enduring Question course, Geographies of Imperialism: History of Colonization. Her most recent book is entitled, The Late Ottoman Empire and Egypt: Hybridity, Law and Gender. She sits on the editorial boards of the Contemporary Levant Journal and HAWWA: Journal of Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World. She has extensive research experience in Egypt, Italy, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.

Ethan Baxter

Ethan Baxter is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Associate Dean for the STEM Disciplines in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College. His isotope geochemical research uses the composition of rocks and minerals to reconstruct Earth鈥檚 past, understand its present, and plan for the future. His work has taken him and his students to such locations as the Greek Islands, the Alps, Scotland, Iceland, and Norway.

A Boston area native, he earned his BS at Yale University, his PhD at UC Berkeley, and completed a postdoc at Caltech. He was the 2007 Clarke Medalist of the Geochemical Society and is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America. A passionate science communicator, he has given over 100 invited lectures at institutions around the world. He is the host and creator of Every Rock Has A Story, an educational YouTube Channel for children and anyone who finds joy in the wonders of the Earth.

Mary Crane

Mary Crane is the Thomas F. Rattigan Professor in the English Department at 天美传媒app and is also Director of the Institute for the Liberal Arts.听She studies sixteenth and seventeenth century British literature, especially Shakespeare, and especially in relation to the history of education, science, and technology.听Her courses include 鈥淪hakespeare Truth and Lies,鈥 鈥淜nowing the Other in Early Modern England,鈥 the Beowulf to the Restoration survey of English literature, and an Enduring Question course called 鈥淩evolutionary Media: How Reading Changes Us.鈥澨齋he lived in Oxford, England for a year between her undergraduate and graduate studies (many years ago) and has traveled there for research and conferences since.

Noah Snyder

Noah Snyder

Noah Snyder is a geomorphologist who studies the response of rivers to changes in land-use, climate, and tectonics. He is Professor and Chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Boston College. He studied geology at Bates College, finishing in 1993. He received his PhD from MIT in 2001, and conducted postdoctoral research for the US Geological Survey in northern California. Since arriving at Boston College in 2004, his research has focused on rivers and associated land-management issues in the eastern United States, such as dam construction and removal, reservoir sedimentation, and changing flood risk.

Michael Noone

Music historian Professor Michael Noone has Spain on the brain. With an inextinguishable passion for connecting the sounds, images, and gestures of the past to vibrant living cultures, Michael uses his knowledge of Iberian music as a key to unlock the secrets of Spain and Portugal. In 2006, he was recognized by King Juan Carlos I for his contribution to Spanish cultural life.
