Master of Arts in Writing & the Human Condition (Online)
Program Description
The Master of Arts in Writing & the Human Condition offers a first-of-its-kind course of study, organized around the conviction that all distinguished writers, regardless of genre, must first be acute psychologists. On the strength of that insight, the program pursues two distinct, but intimately related ends: mastery of the technical craft of storytelling and literacy in the rich history of cross-pollination between psychology and literature. Students will take ten courses over five consecutive semesters that combine writing instruction from distinguished authors with an accelerated study of the psychological humanities from the ancient epics all the way up to contemporary best sellers. A low-residency modality will provide working professionals with the flexibility of largely asynchronous online coursework and the community of weekly one-hour meetings with their professors and cohort as well as a four-day writing retreat during the summer semester.聽 Graduates of the program will find their place in a conversation dating back to Gilgamesh, and they will do so through the development of both the style and insight that comprises their unique voice.
After completing this program, students will be able to:
- Acquire knowledge of the history and structure of different genres of creative writing and their relationship to psychology聽
- Acquire the ability to interpret one鈥檚 personal and/or clinical experience in the context of the humanistic insights of the psychology
- Develop long-form craft skills in at least one writing discipline (novels, poetry, short stories, plays, memoirs, psychodynamic case studies, or essays)

Graduate Certificates
The Graduate Programs at Woods College of Advancing Studies offer several graduate certificates. Each certificate requires the completion of several courses that build students鈥 knowledge and skills that are aligned with industry needs.
Prospective students may apply for a certificate program without becoming a Masters鈥 program student. Students who are or will be enrolled in one of the Masters鈥 degrees, may only take a graduate certificate if the certificate is fully outside their degree program.聽
A certificate may be completed at the same time as a degree program only if the certificate and degree program are independent of one another. Once a student is enrolled in a graduate degree program, the certificate, if within the same program, will become a concentration. Students may complete only one concentration in a degree program.聽
If a student completes a graduate certificate and within 5 years enters a degree program, the graduate certificate may be applied toward the degree program, if those courses are determined to be the equivalent of courses required for the degree.聽
For more information about the graduate certificates please contact the respective Graduate Program Directors or Graduate Student Advisors.
